Ah.  I didn't realize that's what you were getting at.

Actually, it doesn't *need* to.  That was a conscious choice.  I did it
because, as I implied in my earlier message, I saw no practical reason
for Texinfo to ever be cross-compiled.  (And I still don't, I'm afraid,
seems to me Mark could just build texinfo on his sparc after the
compilers are there, but whatever, I know there are theoretical reasons
why it would be nice to support it.)  I judged it more useful for the
native build to run the built binaries as a test than to worry about
cross-compiling.

Ok, so since now you're worrying about cross-compiling anyway, it would
seem the simple solution is to distribute the .info* files and avoid
having to run makeinfo.  Is that right?  Doing that sounds a lot more
appealing than worrying about a bunch of texinfo-specific
cross-compiling hacks.  Even after you implement it (and shouldn't you
be working on grep :)?), I wouldn't be thrilled about maintaining it in
perpetuity.
