I'm not sure how "not a high priority" equates "not anywhere on the
road map" when there's an open ticket saying "nice to have but doesn't
look easy" ;)

If the path you end up following would work as part of Fabric (given
that it does use a new fork of paramiko), a pull request to either
Fabric or the 'ssh' lib would certainly be appreciated, as mentioned
earlier.
