In the long-term, I'd like to make it easier to add new types of
resource, and change the properties of current resource types, so I'm a
bit suspicious about hard-wiring rules into the code about which
resources should be updated more often.

That said, the underlying assumption does suggest a simpler and more
general solution - just don't update the gradients for resources that
aren't currently in use.  For example, if all of your globs can swim,
except for the ones on the way to the pool, only update non-swim
gradients for the pool.
