I talked with Tom about it, and it took him all of 3 seconds before he
came up with a '--log-header X=Y' option to commit.  Something along the
lines of: 

$ tla commit --log-header my-id="RMS <address@hidden>" \
             --log-header date="<the date>"
          

Would that work for you?
