Which (to me) means we should try to prevent such misunderstandings in
the future. Maybe it would be better to find some alternative TLD to
host this? Is there anything else we could do?

Using another TLD would mean that the FSF doesn't get credit for
hosting these projects. We would lose a lot, and gain very little.
In this case, we would have gained only a slight savings in time, the
time it took you to explain that these are not official FSF projects.

The real cause of his anger seems to be that we are hosting a forked
version of his program. If we try to solve a problem, that seems to
be the one worth solving.

Perhaps before we host a package we should ask the developer, "Is this
a forked version of someone else's program? If so, have you tried to
cooperate with the developer?" We could make an effort, in that case,
to get them to start cooperating.

If that effort fails, we would go ahead and host the forked version.
Since we believe in the right to fork, we should not refuse to forked
versions.
