Alex, can you retry  sftp -1v address@hidden:/upload/cp-tools ?

I think that there *is* a difference:

Look at the versions of OpenSSH.  Rudy is using 3.5p1 and
John is using 3.4p1.

For another comparison, here is my log (note I am using
3.4p1 version of OpenSSH):
