Originally, we didn't have -R and just used --depth. But that doesn't
make sense for drop, so I added -R. I'm not sure there *is* a reason it
makes sense to use --depth instead of -R ; AFAIK the only reason we use
--depth anywhere is that we didn't have -R yet.
