It's also a separate program which provides encrypted logins to
ordinary FTP, along with a similar deal for telnet.  ISTR the "s"
stands for Stanford.  It might also stand for FTP over SSL, which
would be a third use for that name (it's possible that the Stanford
netutils suite was implemented via SSL, I don't recall the details).

I was certainly more familiar with the Stanford sftp than with the SSH
sftp subsystem until I'd been using arch for several months.
