I disagree. For the vast majority of purposes, locally keeping as much history as is available is much more useful than fetching only the most recent revision from a remote host. I see the difficulty with this approach for people throwing 1GB files around, but for the rest of us, disk space is cheap and having complete history is useful to enable disconnected working.
