        I've seen a similar thing on a MiniRobominds board, and fixed it
        by adding a "pull-to-inactive" resistor on the "E" line right at
        the LCD. (I can't remember if it was a pullup or a pulldown).

I guess it's 'pull-down', since 0V is the inactive state of E.
A 5K1 would be ok I guess?
