In the top window I run mutt, in the bottom window I run this:

while : ; do fetchpop -arp ; sleep 60; done

I specially hacked fetchpop to only show the Subject: and From: lines of the
mails as they are downloaded and no extraneous crap such as
"There were 0 messages in your POP box"
