In this case, "missing files" would just be links to their "up",
recursively, up to the deepest really output file. Anchors do the
rest.
Right, we can implement splitting by chapter this way, since splitting
by chapter requires an output subdir anyway. To the rest of the world,
it will appear as split by node. That is, each node will have a file,
but the non-chapter node files will do nothing but redirect to the
chapter files at the given anchor.
I know many users would appreciate this. Patches welcome :).
However, this does not alter the problems with --no-split vs. --split.
I do not think it is a good idea for --no-split to create a directory
full of html redirects. That defeats the purpose of --no-split. It
could be done optionally, I suppose.
